Having just returned to the country of my birth after twenty years away, I related hard to so much that goes on in this novel - both the going and the returning.
The handling of issues of race from the perspective of a non-American black was, for me, the fascinating core of the novel, but Adichie manages to pack so much more into her book as well. The narration was amazing and probably added to the story for me.

this was a re-read for me, because it was selected as a group read in an online book club. though i felt very strongly about this novel the first time i read it a few years ago, i think the book suffered for me this time because of the drawn out schedule (i am really not good at reading one book over an extended period of time). i felt myself getting a bit impatient with the characters while i was reading. my own experiences aside, this is a very good story and adichie is a terrific wr ...more

Really interesting! I could relate to a lot of Ifemelu's experiences as she dated different kinds of men, and as a result felt a little emotionally drained. But I appreciate that experiences similar to my own was written about. That was new for me.
