It is difficult to add something new to the many reviews of this book. The GR description has a few superlatives that might not belong, but the basics are there: the rescue of Jewish prisoners held by the British in post WWII. The scenes and basic plot are true to history, only the names and their part in this piece of history are changed.

Diamant does well with this story but I did feel she could have given more depth or, I suppose background is the better word, to the four main characters. The very brief summary of their lives at the end of the novel was disappointing, but I recognize anything further would have double the size of the book. This is a well crafted story set after WWII in Palestine. The British hold "illegal" immigrants in detention camps as refugees from Europe pour into Palestine after the war. The story centers around four young Jewish women who have lost their families and have come through the war via different routes--from surviving a concentration camp to being part of the resistance. This novel is a fictionalized account of the real life escape of 200 immigrants being detained at Atlit, the detention center run by the British in Palestine in the 30s and 40s. It centers around 4 women from different countries and different experiences during the Holocaust who meet and become friends when they are detained in Atlit.
