What happened in summer 1963? And how it is linked to summer 2013?
I was eager to read Smith's latest book, as I loved Child 44 and yet I was not sure how much I'll like it because the last book in the trilogy was a disappointment.
The Farm was better than I expected. A well written page turner as Child 44 but also with more layers then that.
And more personal. Few years ago, Smith's father phoned to tell him he suspected his mum was mentally ill. Hours later, she arrived in Britain.

"If you refuse to believe me, I will no longer consider you my son."
The Farm is a quick, engrossing read, the kind of book you'll want to finish in one sitting. Short chapters end in cliffhangers, resulting in a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Descriptions of the stark Swedish countryside, of hunting mushrooms in the forest, and of creeping around the house of a neighbor come to life through Smith's expert voice. As well as bringing individual scenes to life, Smith also successful ...more

Daniel’s parents have recently retired from the UK to a farm in Sweden, where his mother comes from. He believes they’re happily settled until his father phones to say his mother has become paranoid, imagining “terrible things”, and is in a mental hospital. But soon his mother is on Daniel’s doorstep – not totally convenient since he hasn’t told them he’s gay and living in his partner’s flat. But his parents turn out to have plenty of secrets of their own.

This is a good novel to pick up, read in one or two sittings, and immediately forget you've ever read it. It was a compelling enough plot that I wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next, but not anything that will stick with me.
The characters are all but non-existent in this novel. They have names and the barest of personalities, but that's about it. The plot is presented in a very matter-of-fact, almost sterile manner. In some ways, this works to make it more of a page turner, ...more

This book was recommended by one of the Goodreads groups I participate in. I had never heard of this and vaguely associated this author with Russian spy novels (which I guess is fair enough since Child 44 seems to be his most popular). The book presents a fairly interesting case study of paranoia and a bit of guessing about the reliability of different narrators. I found the book compelling and raced through it in a couple of days reading the kindle edition on my phone. I enjoyed the writing eno

DNF: I cannot continue with this audiobook. While the audio narration isn't really the issue, although this is the first time where I've heard an audiobook where the two narrators speak as though in conversation and not alternating parts of the story, the issue lays firmly in the story itself. It is painfully lame. I know (believe me I know) families are dysfunctional but there is something so irritating with this family - they operate as though they are mere acquaintances and keep so, so much i

This is a quick and easy read, but I didn't love it. I think I read somewhere that the story is inspired by the author's mother's psychotic break, so that makes it pretty interesting. After reading the reviews though, I expected it to be much more of a thriller.

This book will get you caught UP in the drama! The author took me on quite a journey as he did a brilliant job at capturing the urgency of the situation, and giving enough details so that I could picture the entire scenario from beginning to end. It felt so real, and it made me ask myself - what I would do if my dad says my mom is crazy, and my mom said my dad has hooked up with some dangerous people and is trying to get her locked up!
