This was a very odd book unlike anything I've ever read. Fortunately, it was a very intriguing odd book, but also a book that required a vast literary background to really understand. Every other word seemed to be an allusion to some famous classic. Besides the fact that you MUST have read The 3 Musketeers before this book, other recommended titles include: The Count of Monte Cristo, Twenty Years After, Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, Mutiny on the Bounty, Notre Dame de Paris, Cyrano de Bergerac

If there is such a genre as literary mysteries, this certainly is one among them. This is all based on Dumas' real book, The Three Musketeers, but also a book Pérez-Reverte made up, title shortened to The Nine Doors. Corso has come into the possession of one draft chapter of the Musketeers and is asked to verify its authenticity. From another channel, he has the same commission about the fictitious book.

Good mystery - just bordering on the supernatural without ever really going there, but it keeps you wondering.Perez-Reverte is a good writer. I'll have to read more by him. A friend of mine lent me this one. It turns out I have another of his books, Captain Alatriste, in a stack I haven't gotten to yet.

I've watched the The Ninth Gate, the movie version of the novel (a detective story set in literature), a half-dozen times. I like the movie and Johnny Depp's performance very much, although I'm always baffled by the conclusion. I found the novel equally compelling, and the differences between the film and the text fascinating. I'd like to report that I now understand the end, but I can't. Don't help me.

I listened to an audio edition that is marked as abridged. I want to read a print edition. I am not sure what may be missed in the audio but a lot of Perez-Reverte’s intriguing plotting and beautiful writing is here. I just feel that I have missed some clues to the mystery’s conclusion. Absorbing.

A somewhat strange book. Croso finds rare books for exclusive clients. He ends up with an original chapter of The Three Musketeers and a rare book on how to summon the devil. He's chased around by people resembling characters from The Three Musketeers. It was interesting to read but very odd.
