I have sometimes found reading non-fiction to be a chore, even when I'm very interested in the subject. Reading Erik Larson is a pleasure. He has the ability to tell his story in a very smooth style - almost fiction-like - and he gave me a good understanding of the time period. There is plenty of detail, but I never felt it was in the least tedious.

A book that's not particularly within my comfort zone. I liked that I've learnt a piece of history and I enjoyed all the personal stories the author has included in this book which made it all the more interesting and not at all dry. What I was really uncomfortable with was knowing something bad is about to happen; the impending sense of doom (even if it already happened IRL) made me dragged my heels in having to pick the book up to read the next chapter. For me, Dead Wake plodded along and lacked the necessary tension to drive the narrative. Larson spent too much time focused on the background information of the many passengers and then failed to make meaningful connections when the time came to learn if certain passengers lived or died. Having already read Candice Millard's A Destiny of the Republic, a prime example of how to successful weave both interesting minutiae and historically significant events, I was disappointed by Larson's attempt.
