The theme of childhood traumatic events leaving lasting damage runs through "God Help the Child". The central figure in the book is Lulu who was rejected by her lighter skinned parents because her skin was "midnight black, Sudanese black". When she was young, Lulu makes a terrible mistake to get her mother's attention and approval. When Lulu becomes older, she works for a cosmetics firm and changes her name to Bride. Short and intense book where different character are handled in a wonderful was by Tony Morrison. Not one word is too much, and the sentences go right to the target. I haven't read this author for a while and now I understand is better if I go back a read something of her previous work, because there is more than Beloved.
