What Members Thought

While there's a lot of fun stuff in there, I don't believe that all the chorus parts added much worthwhile to the story. Also, while I feel the need to make O. the resident villain posthaste, there isn't really all that much making the story enjoyable. Other than occasional laughs and the fact that it's a retelling.

The Penelopiad is the counterpoint to Homer's Odyssey from the mouth of Penelope, Odysseus' wife. The work has Penelope, now dead and therefore free to be completely honest, informing the reader about her travails. She is a Princess of Sparta and the cousin to Helen of Troy. As Odysseus goes off to fight the Trojan War, we learn that Penelope (left at the Palace in Ithaca) resents Helen, who enjoys the fact that nations are fighting over her. Fabulous book, such a simple yet entertaining read. I think it also helps that I had just read The Odyssey. Atwood is so funny and cynical, I love it! Good to hear the female side of things but more importantly, one can't help but giggle at the cliches of Greek tragedy seen from today's perspectives! Totally worth the four hours I spent on this!!

I really enjoyed this one. It helps to have a familiarity with Greek mythology, especially The Iliad and The Odyssey, before reading this one. The contrast is very amusing at times, but has deeper moments as well. This is one of those "makes you think" novels. Highly recommended.
