What Members Thought
Michael Cunningham paid homage to Virginia Woolf and her novel "Mrs Dalloway" when he wrote "The Hours" (which was the working title for Woolf's book). There are three story lines in "The Hours", each showing one day in the life of a woman. Virginia Woolf is writing "Mrs Dalloway" in 1923, Laura Brown is reading "Mrs Dalloway" in 1949 and planning a small party for her husband, and Clarissa Vaughn is preparing for a large party in 1999 to honor her friend, Richard, who is dying of AIDS.
