This is really a case of me not being in the right mood for this book more than of the book not being great. It's a well written, extremely honest and powerful account of the German experience on the front line during WWI. But I just never connected with the novel, despite all of its merits.

five because of pathos, not divorceable from its pathos, it's not a great novel but a great book of suffering in war
