The edition I read was one with a fine Introduction by one Harry Hansen, who apparently had also served in The War to End All Wars. In it, he quotes Remarque:

I listened to the whole book in one afternoon. The narrator for this version of the audiobook (Frank Mueller) did an excellent job with the narration and the poetic rhythm of the language. The book is heartbreaking and evocative. It definitely deserves its place among the classics of Western literature.
I don't know how I managed to miss this one until now. I'd heard of it, of course, but somehow never had it assigned in school and never picked it up.
