I 1st read this as a kid, and couldn't/didn't appreciate it enough at that time. I didn't realize that I was holding a precious gem. Re-reading as a teen, it quickly became one of my favorite books of all time, and one that I now constantly re-read. The story of Francie Nolan growing up poor in Brooklyn before the First World War, with her brother, hard-working mother and charming but shiftless singing-waiter father. Not very much happens in terms of plot but the characters are very well drawn and there is an amazing amount of detail in every little event, from witnessing childbirth to a bowl of flowers in the library. Very informative! A great snapshot of residential city survival in the early 20th century. But just another example how people should never try to live AND be happy in NewYorkCity-type places. Misery from the beginning of history in that place. (And yes I am a biased reader. I prefer living in rural slower paced areas with low costs of living.)
