What a way to start the new year! I love when I find a hidden (from me, at least) gem in my endlessly long TBR list, and this is one of those.
This novel has everything I tend to love most - wonderful characters, thought-provoking scenes with strong sense-of-place, a lot of metaphors and connections but in a messy way that allows for reflection and interpretation, magical realism. I really like listening to Murakami's books. With a good reader, I find myself involved in the emotional pull of the book much more quickly and easily in audio book format. The readers here were fantastic and really brought this book to life. I would still recommend that new readers of Murakami's work start with one of the more classic choices like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle instead of jumping in here. But for Murakami fans this book absolutely delivers and is highly recommended. The story lines

We follow the stories of a 15 year old runaway boy and an old mentally disabled old man who whilst appeared not to have anything to do with each other are somehow linked. There are parts to the stories which are intriguing but most are just strange. This definitely would not be a book I’d recommend to my more conservative friends noting the sexual content & “Oedipean curse”. At the end, we are left to infer some conclusions & meanings for ourselves.

The end kind of lost me.... I was doing fine with the metaphysical arguments until the last fifth of the book, then things stopped coming together. There were several story lines that I felt were left open, and because of this, I couldn't reconcile the story as a whole.
