What a way to start the new year! I love when I find a hidden (from me, at least) gem in my endlessly long TBR list, and this is one of those.

This novel has everything I tend to love most - wonderful characters, thought-provoking scenes with strong sense-of-place, a lot of metaphors and connections but in a messy way that allows for reflection and interpretation, magical realism. Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore primarily follows fifteen-year old solitary Kafka Tamura, who runs away from home because he can no longer stand the presence of his malevolent father. His father had prophesied that Kafka would fulfill the Oedipal curse - that he would murder his father, and sleep with his mother and sister. His mother had run away with his sister when he was four, so he had no memory of how they looked. To escape the curse, he leaves Tokyo and travels down to Takamatsu, whe ...more

I really like listening to Murakami's books. With a good reader, I find myself involved in the emotional pull of the book much more quickly and easily in audio book format. We follow the stories of a 15 year old runaway boy and an old mentally disabled old man who whilst appeared not to have anything to do with each other are somehow linked. There are parts to the stories which are intriguing but most are just strange. This definitely would not be a book I’d recommend to my more conservative friends noting the sexual content & “Oedipean curse”. At the end, we are left to infer some conclusions & meanings for ourselves.

The end kind of lost me.... I was doing fine with the metaphysical arguments until the last fifth of the book, then things stopped coming together. There were several story lines that I felt were left open, and because of this, I couldn't reconcile the story as a whole. ...more
