What Members Thought

It has taken me weeks to post this! Meanwhile, I've been grumbling about this book in my groups. I finished it, and didn't hate it, but it bothered me. In fact I nearly chucked it across the room a few times, but as a rule I do not finish books that I don't believe are worth my time. This one was. My rating is sort of an average between a 5 for the book's literary merit and just barely a 2 for my enjoyment (or lack thereof).

A classic is a classic is a classic! Non stop action and unforgettable characters combine to make this one of the all time great books. A Swashbuckler to the max! If you haven't read this DO SO. Same for Monte Cristo. BTW - I read the Pevear translation and think it is well worth seeking out.

Personnellement, je pense que la littérature espagnole souffre le plus de cette maladie dans l'hémisphère

Dumas knows how to vividly paint characters, engage the readers in brilliant dialogue that drives the story forward, and he knows how to write an adventure plot that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.
I was very amused at the various metatextual elements that creep up, e.g. references to Don Quixote etc. Dumas is much more modern than one would think, given that he wrote this more than 150 years ago.

Reading ebook version.
Waaaay too long to read in the electronic version. I now seem to have the attention span of a gnat, and this has done nothing to increase it.
