I read Willful Creatures in one sitting earlier this year. Before that, I'd never heard of Aimee Bender. I so adored the short stories that I immediately sought out her novel. And this book was good. But it didn't have the magnificence of the short stories.

This novel traces the story of Rose, who discovers that she can taste the feelings and thoughts of the people who made the food she eats. This is a fabulous idea that was described with interesting detail. But nothing ever really happened wit

I think there was really not much wrong with this book; my mind was not concentrating this week-end so I kept picking the book and putting it back down. It's hard to enjoy a book that way--I'm sorry, Aimee Bender. I'll have to try of reread of this later when I'm concentrating better. ...more

I found this novel horribly depressing. I didn't really enjoy any of the characters but I thought the whole idea behind the novel was a good one. I liked George, but that just added to the overall feeling of depression I got from the entire book. Three stars for creativity though. ...more

I went into this book wanting to like it. I thought the concept of a girl who could taste the emotions of others in the food that she eats was very creative and could allow for very creative story-lines. I felt like it could have been explored a lot more throughout the story and just wasn't. Her brother's gift just seemed to be a distraction throughout the story and was never fully explained. Overall I just felt let down that there wasn't enough of what I expected out of the book. ...more

Was not feeling this book as much as I thought I would. It would be "magical realism," except it didn't really...go anywhere. Or resolve anything. And the "magical" parts didn't serve as a good metaphor/allegory/etc. for anything. Plus it just felt kind of hipster-y. Can't explain it any other way. And hipsters annoy me. Two stars because it was a quick read and kept me entertained enough as I unpacked (listening to the audiobook). ...more

A fascinating read... confusing, sad... very, very lonely...

I'm still not quite sure what I think as I mentioned it was kind of confusing and I kept thinking there's something wrong with the people around her or is it her? Still haven't made up my mind. Maybe, there isn't anything particularly wrong with anyone but just how life is. That's what's sad and yet... it's not far off, it is quite realistic in a way.

I really wanted to like the book, but unfortunately I was disappointed. The premise is interesting: the girl, Rose, can taste people's emotions through the food they make. The book just didn't deliver though. I listened to an audio book, it was narrated by the author, and she has an extremely dull voice, which didn't help either. ...more
