I have to admit this one left me kinda blah. I wasn't able to engage with many the characters. I usually anticipate one of Connie Willis's novels, but this one just didn't really do it for me. The novel is not bad - by any means. Personally I think I just read it at the wrong time. (It happens) It may also be that I feel World War II is just overdone - with all those time travelers running about in it, especially the London Blitz - I'm starting to wonder if .. ok I'm kidding. This book took me a long time to read. GR reports that I've been struggling along since the end of July and it's now the beginning of December when I finally finished it, only to realize that this is actually only the first half of the book and I now have to read All Clear to finish the story. Gah.

I was completely riveted by this book. I enjoyed the history and stories being told; I felt as though I was learning and getting an additional perspective on the Blitz. Sure there were moments of me asking, "Why don't you just do this...", but I went with it and still enjoyed the read.

I've listened to this to and from work for the past couple of weeks and picked it up to read when I was too tired for anything else (whisper sync rocks sometimes) because it demands very little of of its readers. It's way to shaggy, the suspense structure drove me crazy, and its rife with British cliches (Alf & Binnie!) but I enjoyed it and will, with a short break, continue on to All Clear.
