What Members Thought

This is a wonderful novel that I would highly recommend to anyone. I feel it crosses age and gender boundaries and will be appreciated and loved by so many. It would be a great read-aloud book for families with younger children, is perfect for kids aged 10 and older to read independently, and is a novel adults will enjoy too. It's a great book of historical fiction with a believable and interesting main character.

What a fun story of a relationship of a girl with her rather forbidding grandfather in 1899 Texas. He encourages her scientific study; she draws him back into family life (sort of).
Calpurnia will never be the debutante daughter her mother hoped for, but she has the makings of an independent and classy young woman.
The stories of family life are hilarious.
