I had a Lana Del Rey soundtrack playing in my head by the end of this one. Edna has some serious summertime sadness and the emotion really hit me...eventually. I definitely get the fear of subverting one's identity to conform with social expectations for the perfect wife and mother, though I still found it jarring that Edna's moving out to her own little artist's cottage still meant bringing along the servants. The Awakening is the story of a young woman, wife and mother, living in New Orleans in the late 1800s. At one point, she decides she’s not going to do anything except whatever she wants to do. Fortunately for her, she has the financial means to do so and her husband takes off on business and his mom takes the kids. How nice to be so unencumbered!

I read this book initially because it fit many categories in 2015 Reading Challenge including Book written more than 100 years ago and Challenged or Banned Book. But I was intrigued by Kate Chopin's treatment of the subject of women in the late 1800s.
