Beautiful story. George Eliot is very skilled at creating in depth origins and motivations for her characters. I don't think I've ever read anyone who does it better. She has an eye for human weakness and foibles, but it never veers into absurdity (although, sometimes, that can be fun) or contemptuousness.

This is a story of redemption. Silas Marner is a poor man who is tricked and deceived as a young man, but settles in an isolated area as a weaver. He becomes a miser, delighting in his hoarded gold, until the day that his savings are stolen, soon to be replaced by a more real treasure - a child.
