OK. So I knew we were assigned this in school, and I have been wondering if I actually read it, or whether I skipped reading it and just listened to classroom discussions. I think I was a good listener. I remembered the important plot points, but the more I read the more I was convinced that 55 years ago I never actually read beyond the first pages. I'll acknowledge that I was definitely not mature enough as a reader for this back then, and that I wasn't the best of students.

I don't know George Eliot very well. In fact, I've only ever read Middlemarch which GR kindly informs me was 8 years ago and... I cannot remember what it was about (yes, that memorable!). My review notes though that I didn't care for most characters & I struggled in the reading so I guess that's one reason why I haven't been reading any more of her books.

I do care for Silas Marner though. He appears to be a typically good young man though maybe a tad on the boring side but he was hard done by. A ...more

Silas Marner is a weaver who was exiled from his home and he secludes himself away hoarding up gold until one day his gold is stolen. Then Marner is given a gift which introduces him back into the world. I found the beginning to be a bit slow but it picked up once the robbery and subsequent events occurred.
