This is the story of Dinah, Jacob's only daughter who was barely mentioned in the bible. However, this author has weaved her imagination over who she was and what her life was like as a woman in that time of ancient history. Of course, she had to keep the main (well-known) part of the story.

I'm not sure what all the hype was about with this book. The book was perfectly readable and nice to read a feminist recapture of Dinah's story. That said, the sex scenes were extremely tedious and the conversational tone overlayed with Historical Significance got sort of tiring by the end of the book. I won't be rushing to recommend this to anyone, but it'd be a perfectly entertaining book to read on a long flight.

A retelling of the Bible's Book of Genesis, this story has everything one would expect considering its origin. I felt like I was continually reading of geneologies, marriages, sex, and other family affairs. There were some portions that I enjoyed, but overall I felt the main character to be extremely self-centered. Considering that the intent is for this to be a story of a woman in the Bible, I felt a bit guilty about thinking negatively about her.

The bible story of Jacob's family told from the perspective of his only daughter, Dinah. A story of family, work, love and betrayal, gently laced with the customs, religions, and day-to-day details of the time and place.

This book greatly intrigued me. A fictional accout about a little tidbit from the bible. About a woman the good book gives us little information. I think Anita Diamant did an incredible job making these people seems like you could reach out and touch them.
I read this book, as a book club read. It was mostly favorably received and everyone agree it was nice getting a woman presective of the goings on of the Old Testament. Whose to say Anita didn't hit the nail on the head with her story of Dinah ...more

Didn't think I'd like it, but my Aunt gave it such an enthusiastic review that I had to read it. Glad I did. It was fantastic. We could quibble about some OT inaccuracies, but it was far more fun to think about what life in those times was like for women.
