This is the first time I read this book. It is a story told from a nine year old's point of view. His father is a commander in Hitler's army. The boy Bruno, doesn't know this. In fact, he has led a very sheltered and privileged life. One day, his family moves to a house near Auschwitz concentration camp or as it is pronounced in the book, OutWith. When I first started reading this, I couldn't believe how naive the main character was but then I realized that Bruno probably would not have been tol ...more

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day)
This is one of those books that languished in the famous TBR, and would have remained there longer, if not for the fact that suddenly I began to see this title all over the blogosphere last month. And so I picked this one, already well aware of the debate around this book - something about a shocker happening at some point, a genuinely moving perspective vs an outrageously immature narrator. oh my... What a horribly powerful book. The story was easy to read and the writing is quite witty; I didn't realise what Out-With / The Fury are until nearly halfway (I have a good excuse: I started reading at 7am on the train to work BEFORE COFFEE, it hit me what they were when I continued reading at lunchtime).

The story was told from Bruno's perspective. Bruno is 9 years old and so far, he is quite ignorant of what is going on. He realised things aren't good but he is not quite sure what's wr

This book is so sad! It is about a boy Bruno, whose father is appointed as commandant at "Out-With" by "Fury". He meets another boy Shmuel who is on the other side of the fence and wears striped pajamas. I liked the perspective of a 9-year-old boy and how naive he is about what's going on. His perspective really shows how the whole thing was so nonsensical. Anyways, definitely a wonderful quick read that I can recommend to anyone. ...more
