Jean Rhys, who was born and raised in the West Indies, wrote this book to tell the story of the first wife of Jane Eyre's Rochester, called Bertha by Charlotte Bronte but here given the name Antoinette. Her husband, unnamed in this book but clearly Rochester, calls her Bertha because Antoinette was also the name of her mother who became mentally ill after the death of her son. Short and incredibly powerful, as an illumination of the "madwoman in the attic" from Jane Eyre, but also (even more so) entirely on its own.
