Short and incredibly powerful, as an illumination of the "madwoman in the attic" from Jane Eyre, but also (even more so) entirely on its own.

Rhys' writing style is reminiscent of James Joyce. In the introductory material contained in the Norton Critical Edition of Wide Sargasso Sea, the editor includes a story about how Rhys was irritated that her editor has published the novel before it was done. When pressed as to what was not finished, she answered that it still had two extra words in it. Rhys' point-of-view style of modernist narration also compares well to the work of Virginia Woolf.

I re-read Jane Eyre just a few weeks prior to tackling Wide Sargasso Sea, which had been on my shelves for way longer than I care to admit. Even though I knew fairly well what to expect, I had major trouble getting into the book, and had to fully restart section 2 after not wanting to pick up the book for a few days running. I appreciate what Rhys was trying to do, but in this instance it wasn't quite for me.
