Starship Troopers is a difficult book to quantify. It reads like three books in one, each with a different purpose and literary value: the philosophical conversations in the classroom, boot camp, and the Bug wars (it was originally written as a serial so it makes sense that it's a bit disjointed). The Bug battles are a fantastic read; the other two areas are well-written and interesting, but overall a bit dry and disturbing.

In a future society where only ex-military people are allowed to vote, this is the story of a soldier involved in the Terran war against an alien species. There are several long passages glorifying violence (eg to teach children a lesson) and the noble soldier, which seemed like nonsense to me, but the actual story - which is more about military training than war or space - is very readable.
