I see why this book won a Hugo Award. I found it way more fascinating than I ever would have expected to find a book about war and boot camp. I'm going to have to rewatch the movie.

The idea of voting being tied to military service was particularly interesting. Unfortunately, I don't feel that the argument can be made that in reality soldiers are more likely than others to be conscious of the good of the group before the individual. Starship Troopers is a difficult book to quantify. It reads like three books in one, each with a different purpose and literary value: the philosophical conversations in the classroom, boot camp, and the Bug wars (it was originally written as a serial so it makes sense that it's a bit disjointed). The Bug battles are a fantastic read; the other two areas are well-written and interesting, but overall a bit dry and disturbing.

In a future society where only ex-military people are allowed to vote, this is the story of a soldier involved in the Terran war against an alien species. There are several long passages glorifying violence (eg to teach children a lesson) and the noble soldier, which seemed like nonsense to me, but the actual story - which is more about military training than war or space - is very readable.
