I really enjoyed this novel, but I just can't quite bring myself to give it that fourth star. The writing is wonderful, it's certainly an original take on the folklore behind both the golem and the jinni, but it took me far too long to actually feel invested in the story.

This is a beautifully written book that gave me all the feels. I loved that Wecker gave us a fantasy novel set in a historical period, that mixed Middle Eastern and Jewish folklore, plus tinged with the immigrant experience. It's set in NY and the city as it was back then is also intricately tied in with the story.

I adored this book the most when it was about the ordinary meeting the extraordinary, and the space it made at those points for expansive imaginings of how much, how deeply, humanity can care and take care. So, you know, good for my 2020 spirits this was, so it was okay that I let this book sit on my TBR for years.
