Ursula Todd is born in the midst of a blizzard in 1910, not once, but many times, during the course of her life - living only to die and be born again, repeatedly, traveling many paths until she lives the life she was meant to live.

Kate Atkinson's writing is superb, and lyrical enough that it carried me through to the end of this book. The plot, however, left me floundering for weeks, trying desperately to claw my way to the end of this depressing tale. While the premise - reincarnation and dest

The conceit of the book is that Ursula continues to be reborn (Groundhog Day-style) into the same life, but slight differences change the outcomes. What if I hadn't walked down the street where I met my partner? What if this person had won an election over that one? This book takes this thinking to extremes, and delves into the tiniest changes that we couldn't possibly trace back to their sources. It was tantalizing to try to catch all the echoes of the other lives ...more

Interesting premise! The sections about the London bombings were so well written. I learned a lot about what it must have been like to live (or die) in them during WWII.
