What Members Thought

A whimsical and magical book that weaves together fantasy, magical realism, historical fiction, philosophy, and musings on what it means to live. I very much enjoyed this slim book -- definitely my favorite Jeanette Winterson book so far. The story changes narrators fairly often, which helped keep the perspective interesting and provided different views of the various somewhat unreliable narrators.

It has been a long time since I read something this good, and I really loved it. Fantastic characters, who are unusual but realistic because of their well-rounded natures and motivations.
I loved the toggling back and forth among perspectives (and times) and role of fruit as exotic, but also representative of the characters. More Winterson is definitely on my TBR.

Very good book! This is one of those books that is one thing on the page and another in the mind. Tantalizing and deep, yet light in tone. I've put it up for Zzz's Best of 08 swap and it'll go off to the winner. =) ...more
