It's on the 1001 list and it fit a task on the Summer Challenge. So I read it. I read it all the way through even though I felt as if I were forcing myself to read just 20 more pages.

I thought this was going to be a murder mystery. It's not. It's a stupid thriller. It's a not very well written stupid thriller, where the plot is contrived and the characters not very interesting. The first person female protagonist is a passive aggressive Inuit. There is plenty of violence for the sake of violence

The lead character, Smilla, was truly compelling and wonderful. She had wit, fashion sense, quirkiness, and perseverance. The book had a wonderful setting in Denmark/Greenland and gave lots of cool background on Danish/Greenlandic history (about which I was and am completely uninformed). The book also had thriller-like pacing and what appeared to be a compelling mystery. I have no memory of why this was on my TBR but it's certainly an odd choice for me. The book started off fascinating because the characters are so compelling and I was interested in the deep details about snow and ice, about the people and environments of Greenland and Denmark, and about the psychological history of Smilla.
