What Members Thought
The lead character, Smilla, was truly compelling and wonderful. She had wit, fashion sense, quirkiness, and perseverance. The book had a wonderful setting in Denmark/Greenland and gave lots of cool background on Danish/Greenlandic history (about which I was and am completely uninformed). The book also had thriller-like pacing and what appeared to be a compelling mystery. I have no memory of why this was on my TBR but it's certainly an odd choice for me. The book started off fascinating because the characters are so compelling and I was interested in the deep details about snow and ice, about the people and environments of Greenland and Denmark, and about the psychological history of Smilla.
