Until a couple of years ago, knowing only the title (which I suppose reminded me of E.T. and Stranger in a Strange Land), I assumed this book was science fiction. Not at all. It focuses on the childhood, adolescence, and college years of Eugene Gant (born 1900), youngest of a tribe-like family living a turbulent life in a North Carolina town, based on Wolfe's own experience.

This is a really beautiful coming-of-age story with wonderful meandering style, experimental perspectives (such as the infant Eugene's) and characters who are severely unlikeable yet still well-rounded and portrayed with sensitivity. A masterpiece.
