Tom Perrotta has a way with suburban middle-aged angst. In this book, he tries a weird science fiction premise--one day millions of people vanish all at once with no explanation. So, from there, the "leftovers" wrestle with grief, religion, and meaning. Have the disappeared been raptured to heaven? There's no indication that those that vanished were more pious or better-hearted than the leftovers. But maybe? The not knowing throws everyone into tailspin.

I love the premise of this book. Some people vanish into thin air while others are left behind. Many call it the "rapture" and wonder why they weren't chosen. Everyone deals with a loss of one type or another. The characters are interesting and fairly well rounded. The plot is consistent as it follows several different lives of the "leftovers" who are trying to make sense of a life turned upside down in an instant. The Leftovers

True Perrotta style. If you've read his other books than you will enjoy this gem. It answers the question what would happen after the rapture. It's quick and breezy and doesn't get into the religious weeds so to speak but definitely gets you thinking....
