The series that tarted it all (for me). I always loved ancient Rome (since I first read Asterix), and detective stories. This was the perfect combination.

In Silver Pigs, we are introduced to Marcus Didius Falco, a hard-boiled detective set in ancient Rome under Vespasian's rule. Falco is taken on a journey from what starts with an upper-class young lady in trouble with some ruffians, to the highest echelons of society and money counterfeiting.

All the foibles of a modern PI with a family along for the ride. :>) I liked the touches that confirmed the setting but could have occurred presently as well. For example, the scene with the Prince and Falco discussing what their barbers are saying.

Overall, I thought the story well written and reasonably paced. I thought the trip back to Rome a bit drawn out but you end up needing the length for the plot.

If you like Agatha Christie you'll love this. The settings are different as they are centered around Rome about 70 AD. Sleuthing in ancient times is fascinating.

This series of detective novels have really been giving me a great ride and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
