The one thing I didn't like about having seen the movie before reading the book is that I already have a preconceived notions of how exactly things should be because I was told (shown) them.

Coraline is a wonderful story of love and bravery. I'm not a fan of horror stories but since it's children's horror story, I thought I should be able to handle it. I didn't do too badly but before recommending it to a child, I'd take into consideration their disposition to freaky things.

Brilliant! Neil Gaiman has the most amazing imagination, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he could come up with a creepy children's story that is totally original. Coraline is a bored little girl living in a new flat with her otherwise occupied parents and some very bizarre neighbors. I experienced it all over, even though I read it after having seen the movie. All over and in all senses, still a bit scared in a fantastic sort of creepiness at the "mental view" of the button eyes. Brr. But Coraline is a hero. There is so much love in this story, so innocent and powerful. ...more

This book was way to creepy for a child!!! Oh man, even I was creeped out, and a little grossed out too. There is no freaking way I am letting my kids read this until they're.....30, and maybe not even then :-). It was certainly a...unique plotline, a little bizarre, but definitely creepy. I would like to have seen a little more explanation as to who the woman was and why she wanted Coraline. I felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions.
