I was surprised how creepy and strange and (a little) scary this book was. I'm surprised my daughter read this in 4th grade!! She said her book didn't have the pictures, and her class read it out loud so she thought it wasn't as scary as reading it by yourself but WOW! I thought the pictures made this even creepier.....

Although this book wasn't terrible, there is no doubt it is a children's story. I like Neil Gaiman's imagination, but I wasn't fully convinced by this fairy tale and I did't really warm to Coraline. I expect that when my children are a bit older they will love it, although even so, there are probably better chilllers out there for their age. I'm disappointed. I like Neil Gaiman a lot normally.

I experienced it all over, even though I read it after having seen the movie. All over and in all senses, still a bit scared in a fantastic sort of creepiness at the "mental view" of the button eyes. Brr. But Coraline is a hero. There is so much love in this story, so innocent and powerful.

So, I was really looking forward to this book, and it was good but now I'm really looking forward just to seeing the movie. The book was sort of, well, short? I was really expecting something a little more complex. More like Stardust.
(below added after watching movie:)
However, it is geared towards a younger set of readers, was satisfyingly creepy, and made me think twice about opening any locked cupboards I might find in any home in my future (I have already opened all the ones worth opening in ...more

Beautiful story of a young girl, feeling bored and neglected by her busy parents, who finds a secret passage through a locked door into another world. This world is a dark replica of her world, created by the other mother, an evil being with black-button eyes and snaky hair who wishes to keep Coraline for her own. Add a talking black cat, a weirdo upstairs neighbor named Mr. Bobo who keeps musical mice, and three ghostly children whose souls she must rescue in order to escape. This is children's

Coraline is a wonderfully creepy story written for juvenile readers. Coraline finds an entrance to a world where everything is similar to her own, but something is not right. Can Coraline save her family and escape? I really liked the atmosphere the book creates. Gaiman does an excellent job with providing very creepy images for the reader. Coraline is a great character, she is brave but not fearless. It has a great message for kids when Coraline says that getting everything you ever wanted is n

What a very scary children's story. An excellent story as I expect from Neil Gaiman.
