I enjoyed the book, very easy to read, although I was extremely frustrated & irritated by Harold's refusal to do anything about the pain in his calf, & put on some better shoes. How VERY useful it would have been if he'd lost a leg in the process, would that have expiated his imagined crimes? It certainly would have made Maude's life harder. A difficult topic, handled in an unusual way - grief is a strange thing, everyone handles it differently & denying it only makes it worse. 3.5 ★ rounded up.

“People were buying milk, or filling their cars with petrol, or even posting letters. And what no one else knew was the appalling weight of the thing they were carrying inside. The superhuman effort it took sometimes to be normal, and a part of things that appeared both easy and everyday. The loneliness of that.”

One morning, Harold Fry receives a letter and, without much thought, he begins a long walk from his home in Devon to Berwick-Upon-Tweed up near the border of Scotland. Harold is retired, his marriage is in tatters and there is a dark and tragic event in his past that he cannot face. Harold's reason for walking is that Queenie, a woman he worked with almost 20 years before, is dying of cancer and he feels that if he walks to her, she'll stay alive.

WOW!
Harold Fry receives a letter from an old colleague, Queenie Hennessey, informing Harold that she is dying of cancer. Harold sets out to mail her a letter and ends up deciding to walk the length on England to visit Queenie believing this will keep her alive. The story is about Harold and his walk and Harold's wife Maureen who he leaves behind and the troubles they have had in their marriage. A rather poignant and bittersweet book.
