Jacob Portman is a 16 year old living in Florida. Jacob's grandfather Abe has told him wild stories about his youth at a school in Wales. When his grandfather mysteriously dies Jacob and his father travel to Wales to try to find out more about Abe's past. The book uses antique photos throughout that have been "minimally" touched up by the author. I wonder how much photoshop was actually involved.
