Just released as a film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as the star-crossed lovers Emma and Dexter, I started this with high hopes for something more than chick lit. What I found instead was a major disappointment. The set-up is that Emma and Dexter spend their last night as college students together and decide to become friends. I read this book because I found the set-up compelling - a look into one day each year for twenty years at the ever changing relationship of friends, destined to be something else. It took a while to get into it, but once it got going, I finished it pretty quickly. The storyline is good, Emma is a great girl, Dexter doesn't really deserve her, but she loves him anyway. Nicholls built up so much tension but did so that we still cared about what was happening even if it wasn't what we wanted to have happen. This novel is full of beautiful language and beautiful love. I ver ...more

I've tried three times now to read this book but at this point, the book wins. I give up. I dislike both main characters. I don't care what happens to either of them really. It really annoys me because I feel like I should like the book! It's well written, I just can't get myself to care enough to want to read it. I've even taken years between readings just to make sure it's not just me being in a slump. Anyway, life's too short to waste on reading books you don't like. ...more
