1.5 star—the ending kind of made it close to okay, but I can't really give it 2 stars.
Mostly, my reaction was "what have you done to the characters? Am I still reading the same series?" I remember how "Frostbite" made me think that there was really good potential for Rose's growth; but here, it's back to square one, and even lower than that.
The novel left me with the feeling that it was but a filler. The first half was completely off-pace for me. It takes ages for Rose to get to the point where ...more

Weakest book in the series thus far, in my opinion. I liked it, but I hope this isn't an indication of the quality of rest of the series.

AMAZING! I was not able to put the book down. If it wasn't for sleep and Thanksgiving getting in the way, I probably would've finished the book in a day. I loved that Richelle Mead took us back to what had happened in previous books without loosing the flow of the book. I loved all the characters. I'm glad that even if we were reading from Rose's point-of-view, we were still able to know what was going on back at the academy. The ending shocked me! Didn't expect that coming, but I loved it. This wasn't my favorite by any means, but it did serve its purpose well by setting up the next big arc for Rose and friends. I'm very anxious to see if they can discover the cure for Strigoi and how they plan to deal with Victor. It was too bad that Rose had to spend nearly the entire book away from the St. Vlad's crew, but I liked the introduction to the Alchemists. Good book that suffered from the disparate settings and characters, but ultimately rebooted the series focus in an interesting way
