Still going with 5 stars because I can't believe this is a YA book. (Not content-wise, but quality-wise).

Richelle Mead doesn't skimp on drama, mystery, violence, or what I like to call 'sexy tiems' in the second installment of her Vampire Academy series.

I enjoyed this book. Rose and Lissa's friendship was one of my favorite things in Vampire Academy. The love and loyalty continues on in Frostbite.Eventhough Rose has to deal with their friendship changing due to Lissa's relationship with Christian. Also Rose really stepped as a guardian in this book. When called on to make tough choices in bad situations she started to really understand what being a guardian meant.

I like this series WAY more than I should. I mean, c'mon, it's a series about beautiful vampires(and those who protect them) at a vampire boarding school. It basically screams "crap cashing in on the Gossip Girl/Twilight craze." And yet it isn't at all. I love the tough, brittle heroine Rose. I love her love-that-cannot-be romantic interest Dmitri. I love that Mead isn't afraid to kill off important characters. I love that it is fast-paced and action-packed and riveting. I love that the characte I like this series WAY more than I should. I mean, c'mon, it's a series about beautiful vampires(and those who protect them) at a vampire boarding school. It basically screams "crap cashing in on the Gossip Girl/Twilight craze." And yet it isn't at all. I love the tough, brittle heroine Rose. I love her love-that-cannot-be romantic interest Dmitri. I love that Mead isn't afraid to kill off important characters. I love that it is fast-paced and action-packed and riveting. I love that the characters get to evolve. I love that despite the fact that Rose has to deal with a LOT of crap in her life, she rarely gets whiny like some YA/chick lit heroines I could name (angry, yes; but whiny, no). I mean, there is some "Dmitri is so dreamy" and "it sucks that I can't be with him" but that is kept to a minimum (at least compared to a lot of the sludge I've read) and when Rose listens to her better angels, she knows and more importantly accepts why they can't be together (of course, Rose has a tendency to self-destruct and she does it in the biggest, most damaging way possible, which often means going after Dmitri when she knows she shouldn't).

That said, there were plotholes, some of which Mead managed to handwave away, but the big one was the whole linchpin of the plot: silver stakes driven into the magical protective ward surrounding a good vampire's compound (which breaks the ward and leaves all the good vampires inside vulnerable). The evil vampires can't touch silver stakes. But humans can. And the heroes are all "Oh my gosh, the evil vampires have NEVER used humans to do their dirty work before! How could we have foreseen this?!?" Umm...really? I mean, really?!?!? If you are an evil vampire and needed a human to, say, break the good vampires' wards with silver stakes or kidnap people in the daytime would you (a) threaten them into doing your bidding (b) pay them to do it (c) compel them to do it with your magic compelling skills (d) any of the above. I'm surprised the evil vampires have managed to live so long with their complete lack of planning skills/common sense/intelligence.

That aside, it's still a kickass series (I'm willing to forgive the plotholes since the rest of the book is so darn good). If you're looking for one supernatural series in the frankly staggering amount of such series that have come out post-Twilight, this should be it. ...more

This is the second book in the Vampire Academy series (after Vampire Academy) which is a series I really recommend reading in order. I enjoyed this more than the first book in the series as the first book issues (like the flashbacks) are gone and a quick introductory prologue means that this leaps straight into the storyline. The book is action packed and well written, building tension to the shocking finale. I ended up glued to the page throughout and I loved that the action moved away from St. Vladimir's to a new snowy location as it changed things up.

Rose didn't irritate me as much in this installment. She still isn't my favourite character but she seemed less mean to people outside her immediate circle. Her mother Janine appears and their relationship also goes a long way to explaining why Rose acts as she does. Lissa and Christian are still awesome and I love that their relationship is bringing out the best in each of them. Dimitri is trying to be all official and teacher-like which means the potential romance with Rose is off, which again contrasts well with the happy state of Lissa and Christian's relationship.

Adrian Ivashkov is fast becoming my favourite character in the whole series. I love his snark and how he relates to Rose and the other main characters. By introducing him, the ideas behind spirit magic can be further developed which is awesome. Another new character that I really like is Christian's aunt Tasha who seems like a great person and again widens the world as the book takes a somewhat political stance when the argument of whether Moroi should learn to defend themselves or continue to rely on their guardians arises.

All in all, this was a great read and I'm looking forward to Shadow Kiss.

The follow up to Vampire Academy was just as good, if not better than the first. I really respect and appreciate that Richelle Mead does not feel the need to censor or dumb down her writing for younger audiences. She doesn't shy away from discussing sex, but keeps it on a level that seemed very realistic and reminded me of my high school years.
