I love this book and can't wait to get the rest in this series. I also can't wait until they make this series into movies, which I think would be much better than the Twilight Saga. Rose is a Dhampir and her best friend Lissa is a Moroi princess. Lissa is a vampire with little fangs and huge magical talents. She can heal and she can use compulsion. Rose feels Lissa's emotions. They live at the Vampire Academy where Rose is taught to be a guardian. The Dhampir are part human and are trained to pr

Really pretty good and a lot better than I thought it might be, having heard conflicting opinions on this series. Even though it starts a tad bit slow, it's a good story with fascinating characters. I would recommend for older teens, 16+, due to some violence and the tendency toward 'raciness' at times. ...more

Definitely a better love story than Twilight ;)
An interesting twist on the usual vampire lore. Some of it does get confusing at times, and there are plenty of YA rolling moments. Don't look for too deep of a story here. But the characters are engaging enough that it made me want to pick up the second book. ...more

There were lots of parts in the beginning where I was drawn in, but it slowed down leading to the middle. But once I hit about 60% of the way through, I couldn't put it down. I walked the dogs while reading, did laundry while reading, cooked dinner while eating, and read instead of sleeping so that I could read straight through and finish it. It was enthralling, and I loved the twists and turns, especially at the very end! The romances were surprisingly well-done, despite my initial dislike of D

Not your average vampire novel. I appreciated the effort to build in the living vs. undead vampire clans and Rose's role as a guardian. The entire system was pretty cool, though I'm not sure I got all of the specifics down on how they mate and function as a society. Still, I liked Rose and Lissa's bond, and the star crossed lover aspect to Rose's feelings for Dimitri. I'm curious to see where the series goes from here!

I usually don't read stories about vampires, and the few I did read before were classic vampire stories - but this one was different with the half-vampires and all, and I liked it a lot. It is written in an easy-to-read style, and I liked the main character from the very beginning. I'm glad that I gave it a chance, and now I want to read the rest of the series as well.

this was a quick read. not really sure how i felt about it. not a whole lot happens until the end. i guess it's a good starter book for a series. it introduces us to the characters. rose seems like a normal teenager caught in a love(crush) triangle. lissa seems way to out of it for me. i know it's a YA, but the story line seems kind of flat to me.
