Enjoyed this novel so much. It's extremely readable, compelling, and thoughtfully written. My only criticism and the reason it's a 4 star rather than a 5 is that I would have loved to have learned more about the Mi’kmaq - their lives, their customs, etc. The writing about grief and the bonds of family was outstanding and the true gift of this novel. I think more background on the Mi'kmaq would have added another layer of nuance to the story. I cannot wait to see what's to come with Amanda Peters ...more

This is just a beautifully written book. It is a heartbreaking story but does not cross into trauma porn like so many others in this genre do. I am very impressed with this debut author. Sparse but powerful poetic language. Deals with racism, grief, mental health, loss, forgiveness, and time in a beautiful and deep way without ever feeling maudlin, sappy, exploitative or phony.
