2.5 stars rounded up to a generous 3. What did i just slog my way through? Maybe it's my fault for having such ~~high~~ expectations from all the ravings it's been getting. There were moments where i saw potential and thought "oh, here is where it gets better", only for that door to slam shut in my face. I didn't like any of the characters, the pace was plodding, and not a lot happened in the story. So disappointed. ...more

Shelves: fantasy, sword-and-laser

This was mostly fun to read; I enjoyed Emily’s voice and her unreliability when she writes about other people, and her dog was awesome. I grew to appreciate her relationship with the colleague who crashes her field research. I was annoyed at the ending, which resolved the action plot with a mostly passive protagonist, despite the many opportunities for her to participate more. It left me with less inclination to pick up the next book.

What an adventure! I loved discovering this magical world of Emily Wilde’s, where faeries and faerie folklore are studied and discussed in academic circles. I loved learning about this world through Emily’s notebook. It was so interesting to be introduced to the different faerie folk, to see Emily’s interactions with each of them, to see her embroiled in certain situations in regards to them, and how she finds solutions to any issue she comes across.
