Darcy Coates’s Dead of Winter is a chilling, atmospheric thriller perfect for fans of Taylor Adams’s No Exit. The story delivers a gory, snowbound mystery that keeps readers on edge as a group of stranded travelers face brutal conditions and a killer among them. Though the pacing isn’t always steady, I found myself eagerly flipping pages to uncover who the murderer was and why. Reading a wintery, snowstorm-filled story while the weather outside remains hot felt like a refreshing contrast.

"We're all gonna die here."

A trip to a cabin in the dead of winter. It's a bus full of of vacationers and they are all subdued but excited. Quickly, however, the trips turns sinister. A huge snowstorm is heading right for them, with hours of snow and wind, and a huge tree blocks their path to the main cabin. When strangers are trapped in a small cabin in the Rocky Mountains due to a terrible storm and a broken bus, there is the perfect time for a killer to pick them off one by one.

Told from only one POV with short chapters, this thriller/horror kept the pages flying for this reader. I binged it in one day and was completely off when I tried to guess the killer ahead of the reveal. Well done! 👏👏👏

Thank you to the publisher and @netgalley for my #eARC

This was fast and exciting, with short chapters, and an intriguing closed-door type-mystery set-up. This felt a tad too long, and I found myself annoyed by the fact that the main character kept referring to the killer as "the butcher" instead of "the killer" (one of those things that once you notice just gets more and more irritating), but it was really clever how the people were interconnected and the twist at the end caught me completely off guard. ...more
