Wow! I loved this book. I'm not usually the biggest fan of werewolf stories, but this one hooked me in. I am also not usually the biggest fan of the device where we get one chapter from one character's point of view and the next from the other main character's, but again, it really worked here. This was so very romantic. Some of what I have felt was missing from the YA romance are the scenes of the 2 main characters together - so that we can feel their relationship develop. Maybe it was all the hype about this book but I think I had something else in mind when I started reading this. I thought it was good but maybe a little boring at times. My favourite characters weren't even the main two. I really liked Beck and Isabel. Now they were exciting.

I enjoyed the sad tone of the book. Grace's despair at the end was delightful... in a non sadistic kind of way. I just really enjoy when an author can put me in the characters shoes.

First of all, this novel is very "Twilight-esque", with the high school girl and the non-human boyfriend and their star-crossed love, only it revolves around wolves rather than vampires. In comparing the two novels, I must admit that I preferred Edward from Twilight over Sam from this novel. Edward was portrayed as very....alpha, with super-human strength and incredibly protective of his lady-love. There was no doubt that he could protect her from whatever evil creature was after her. Grace was attacked by wolves just over 6 years ago however instead of living in fear of them, which would have been understandable noting her harrowing experience, she loves them and defends them from others who think they are just violent animals. There is however one special wolf for her.

It has been a few days since I finished this book and I still can't quite find the words to express how heartbreakingly beautiful this book was to me. I admit when I heard the book was about wolves, I was a bit skeptical... not really my thing I thought. However, a few friends of mine raved about it, so when I saw it in Target one day I grabbed it.

When Grace was young she was ripped out of the tire swing in her backyard by a wolf. As wolves surround her and are about to take her life due to thei It has been a few days since I finished this book and I still can't quite find the words to express how heartbreakingly beautiful this book was to me. I admit when I heard the book was about wolves, I was a bit skeptical... not really my thing I thought. However, a few friends of mine raved about it, so when I saw it in Target one day I grabbed it.

When Grace was young she was ripped out of the tire swing in her backyard by a wolf. As wolves surround her and are about to take her life due to their overwhelming hunger, one wolf saves her. Grace doesn't remember much about the attack other than the yellowish eyes of "her" wolf, her saviour. For years the wolf and Grace watch each other. Grace from her home or backyard and the wolf from the woods. Grace's parents are hippies and MIA a lot of the time, sometimes the wolf watching her is her only company. On some level Grace knows there is something different about the wolf. It isn't until the town folk get nervous about the wolfs actions and take things into their own hands, that Grace finds out just how not normal these wolves are!

Sam is a wolf in the Winter and an 18 year old boy in the Summer. The weather determines the "change", but eventually he will stop changing at all and just be a wolf all the time. Determined to live his life as normal as possible and never lose sight of who he is, Sam fights his dream of staying human versus the responsibilites being one of the pack leaders entails.

As soon as Grace and Sam meet it is love at first sight and when Sam becomes human at a time it doesn't seem possible, they want more than anything to stay together. But it continues to get colder and colder outside and Same is finding it harder and harder to fight the change that is coming. Can they stay together? That is the question.

I love that Maggie writes this story from both Sam and Grace's point of view. I love having a peek inside both of their minds and hearts. The characters are endearing, the storyline entertaining, and the romance is heartbreaking but wonderful at the same time. This book made me feel so many emotions! I laughed quite a few times, and cried a lot. I really was so happy to find out that this book is the first in a trilogy because after I finished I just wanted more! I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and I have so many questions!

In my opinion this book is a must read! 5 stars!

Shelves: ya-and-youth, fantasy-and-sci-fi, series

I really liked the storyline here and the idea of werewolfism as a virus. Teens and pre-teens will like this romance novel, and I enjoyed it; however, it was a bit basic in the writing style, obviously written for the YA market.
