During the Napoleonic Era, a British Navy Captain and his crew conquer a French ship. After boarding the French vessel, they discover it was carrying an extremely valuable dragon's egg. When the egg hatches before the ship is able to return to England, the ship's captain must bond with the hatchling or risk losing the dragon for England. However, by doing so, the captain finds himself with no choice but to leave the Navy and join the Aerial troops. I really enjoyed reading this historical fantas

aka His Majesty's Dragon
Absolutely loved it. I've had this on MtTBR since 22/1/15 & have only just got around to it.
The interaction between Dragon Temeraire & Rider Captain Laurence is delightful. The setting during the Napoleonic Wars is fun - although I may have skimmed a little during battle scenes, I did find some of the naval manoeuvres interesting. Nelson's Trafalgar will never be the same again! I love the mixture of manners from 1805 & those prevailing in the Corps, where men & women bot ...more

An exciting opening with the British Navy taking a French frigate as prize with a surprising find of a dragon egg on board. However, it is about to hatch with no land being in sight. The dragon must be harnessed immediately upon hatching, however, and so, with his sense of duty to country, Captain Will Laurence became the chosen h ...more

It was rather surprising to me that I enjoyed this book so very much because I have never been into fantasy novels, but I really did love this one! Set in the Napoleonic Wars, dragons are used in aerial combat. The dragons are so endearing and the story of one of the dragons, Levita, touched my heart so deeply.
A lot more battle description than I want to read in a book, but otherwise, all I can say is that I want a dragon!!!
