Yelena is a murderer, hands down, absolutely uncontested. And then she gets a second chance - to be the food taster for the Commander in the militaristic regime - a job that could kill her just as easily as the noose. What she didn't expect, though, was the exhiliration of being alive and having a chance to stay that way.

Another book I heard about through goodreads -- and I really enjoyed it. It's listed as a Young Adult book, but it's definitely for grown ups, too. Yelena is a teenager who suffered at the hands of a sadistic family. When she finally kills one of her torturers, she's sentenced to die for the crime.
