I'm really glad that I started out with Clare's other series (The Infernal devices) because this one would have turned me off. It's a first novel, and it reads like one.

Clare famously got her start as a Harry Potter fanfiction writer, and I remember reading and enjoying her stories back in the day. Unfortunately, that is coloring my perception of this book. I guess it's hard to say I didn't like it, per se, just that it was so reminiscent of Harry Potter that I couldn't continue reading it. I was very active in Harry Potter fandom, and as the story progressed, the amount of the things that struck me as OMG Harry Potter became so large that I figured I could just as easily read some good fanfic, since it had gotten to the point where the characters I was imagining were essentially HP characters.
