I originally read this book in 2006 and ended up bawling like mad. When I told my dad, he told me "It's the Holocaust!! It doesn't end well!!" Well, that is a benchmark for me. If I know how a story will end and I still have a severe emotional reaction the author has done their job.

I really liked this book. The characters were all wonderful and the writing was really very intriguing. Markus Zusak can definitely find some very interesting ways to go about describing things and I loved that.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I went into this book, aside from the usual horror associated with Nazi Germany during WWII. What I found amazed me.

Liesel starts as such a simple character but grows into something so complex that you are astounded by the end. And don't even get me started on the narrator... any author that can force the reader to have sympathy for Death is simply amazing.

I’d already seen the movie, plus there is a lot of foreshadowing, so I knew the ending would be both sad and hopeful. I can’t read another bleak book for a while, though. When I saw the movie, I heard it was going to be a hard book to film and I know what they meant now. The writing is full of metaphor, clever prose and even puns. Some of that came through in the film, but I am glad to have read the book t ...more
