I wasn't sure what to expect when I went into this book, aside from the usual horror associated with Nazi Germany during WWII. What I found amazed me.
Liesel starts as such a simple character but grows into something so complex that you are astounded by the end. And don't even get me started on the narrator... any author that can force the reader to have sympathy for Death is simply amazing. ...more

I started this book twice. The first go was a bust. I couldn't get over the pretense of the narrator or the excessive use of imagery (although I did like his deliberate displays of foreshadowing. The one benefit of having a gimmick as a narrator). The author's literary devices are laid naked and bare, which is probably what makes this book a popular teach. I don't say that as a compliment.
