3.5 rounded up to 4. Loved learning about the deaf community and that is really the strength of this novel. Opened my eyes to things I hadn’t had exposure to. But the ending felt very rushed and off-kilter to me. Enjoyed the read overall but wish the ending had been handled differently.

There are not a lot of books with hearing impaired or deaf main characters, so I appreciate when there is one, but this one also gives insight in to their rich culture and community. I like that this give us so many perspectives - a family that is almost completely deaf and very proud, a headmistress who is not deaf but her mother is and has such a deep understanding and love for the community, a girl who has felt "broken" her whole life because she's never been allowed a community that was like

Wow, what a fascinating story, I've never read anything like this and I really enjoyed getting this kind of insight into the Deaf community.

A well-written novel that I couldn't quite decide if it was for adults or young adults novel. Either way, the story was engaging and I found myself rooting for all of the characters. It is the story of the students at River Valley School for the Deaf. Charlie is a girl who is just entering deaf school as a junior (I think) and has never lived in the deaf world before.
